Snow in Oxford

In the “The Kings Arms”

The taste of mulled wine, warm and spiced.

Timber crackling in the fireplace.

Coat racks heavy.

The double-decked bus,

where the chilled windows

fog up with close breath.

“Christ Church College,”

a castle between white meadows and grey city.

The bell tolls,

calling for its students to return.

Gargoyles look down with frozen faces.

Tales of ghosts are murmured under the “Bridge of Sighs”

The “Pitt Rivers Museum” awaits visitors

with stories of eagle-foot candlesticks and hangman’s rope.

A boy curled up with pen and paper.

The snow melts in his mind.

Underneath, a new world.
